ONLINE Sur Chö: Burnt Food Offerings for Those Who Have Passed Away
with Geshe Denma Gyaltsen
November 14 - 15, 2026
Sur Chö is a traditional Tibetan Bön Buddhist practice of burnt food offerings made especially for those who have passed away. It is particularly meaningful during the 49 days following death, when, according to the Tibetan Bön tradition, the consciousness of the deceased passes through the bardo, the transitional state between death and rebirth.
Practiced daily by monks and nuns, and in Bön monasteries, Sur Chö invites us to open our hearts in generosity and compassion. Through the offering of food, prayers, mantra, and visualization, we dedicate our practice to the benefit of those who have died, especially loved ones who have recently passed away. The offerings are also extended to other beings, cultivating generosity and compassion without limitation.
During this two-day online retreat, Geshe Denma Gyaltsen will explain the meaning and purpose of Sur Chö, how to prepare the offerings, and how to perform the ritual. Participants will learn a traditional Bön practice they can offer for loved ones who have passed away, particularly during the 49-day bardo period.
This retreat is open to beginning and experienced practitioners. No previous experience with Sur Chö is required.
